SME Internationalisation Grant Scheme


The SME Internationalisation Grant Scheme, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund 2014-2020, seeks to support SMEs through the provision of a non-repayable grant to part-finance up to 50% of eligible costs related to the active participation in international business promotion fairs held outside Malta. The scheme is thereby aimed at assisting the applicant introduce his/her products/services in new markets and potentially strengthen his/her international market presence.

Next deadlines

This scheme is demand-driven and managed through an open rolling call. Following an evaluation process, eligible applications scoring at least 50% of the selection criteria shall be awarded the grant. SME Internationalisation Grant Scheme will remain operational until 31st December 2020, subject to availability of funds, and shall be awarded on a first-come-first-served basis.

Eligible applicants and actions

Micro, small and medium sized enterprises engaged in an economic activity, irrespective of their legal form, intending to actively participate in international business promotion fairs held outside Malta. Active participation is intended to mean having a stand and exhibiting products/services at the fair.

Eligible costs

Costs incurred from external sources to the undertaking in respect of the following:

  • participation fee and costs related to the construction and setting-up of the stand;
  • rental of the exhibition space/stand;
  • travel costs for a maximum of two employees representing the enterprise and managing the stand/ exhibition space at the fair;
  • Per Diem allowance costs for a maximum of two employees representing the enterprise and managing the stand/exhibition space at the fair, capped to a maximum of eight nights per participant;
  • design and printing of branding material required for the participation at the fair and within the stipulated maximum thresholds; and
  • cost incurred for shipment of exhibits.


The allocated budget for this measure is set at €2,000,000 with indicative annual thresholds of €400,000. The maximum grant value for the participation by a single undertaking at an international business promotion fair under this scheme is set at €10,000, with part-financing eligible costs up to 50%.


Actions financed under this scheme are to be implemented within 12 months from the date of the grant agreement.
